Different types of compressors are used in a wide range of industries from dentistry to manufacturing of large components. The power of the compressor will depend on the job it is performing as a small compressor will be adequate in some cases whereas supplying air to a large piece of plant will require a much higher volume and pressure of air.
Car repair garages and body shops have traditionally been main users of compressors for paint spraying on vehicle body work and inflating tyres. Small mobile compressors are ideal for DIY paint spraying and for powering small pneumatic hand tools such as grinders and sanders.
Factories use compressors in a number of ways and usually have large compressors connected to a dedicated compressed air pipe system. Compressed air is used to drive pneumatic rams in presses and also to move components once they are formed. It is occasionally used in plating to agitate liquids to ensure adequate mixing of chemicals.
In dentistry compressed air is used in the manufacturing of dental plates as well as in the dentist’s surgery where it is used to power drills and brushes. In the dental industry it is important to use dry, hygienic compressors whereas in factories large oil filled compressors are the norm.
